GenCos Say Unpaid Electricity Invoices Hit N6tn, Reject NLC’s Extortion Claims

The Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) has announced a loss of power supply from the national grid, leaving customers across its network without electricity.

The electricity distribution company disclosed the development in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

According to EKEDP, the outage occurred at 1:49 p.m. on Sunday and has disrupted electricity supply across its entire network.

The company explained that the incident originated at the transmission level and is beyond its direct control.

“Dear valued customer, Please be informed that Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) lost supply from the national grid at 13.49 hrs today, Sunday, 28 June 2026. This is currently affecting electricity supply across our network.

“This is a transmission-level incident outside our direct control. We are actively investigating the cause and are in contact with the relevant authorities to establish the full situation and restoration timeline.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience this is causing and assure you that our teams are working to restore normal supply as quickly as possible,” the statement read.

EKEDP said it is working closely with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the outage and establish when electricity supply will be restored.

The company assured customers that further updates would be provided as soon as confirmed information becomes available. It also thanked consumers for their patience and understanding.

National grid disturbances are not new to Nigeria’s power sector. Several electricity distribution companies have experienced repeated outages following disruptions on the national grid.

EKEDP supplies electricity to several parts of Lagos, including Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, Bogije, Elemoro, Orile-Iganmu, Coker, Badagry Expressway, Ijora, Apapa, Mushin, Festac, Amuwo Odofin, Satellite Town, Ojo, Badagry and Agbara.

The company is estimated to receive between 11 and 15 per cent of the electricity transmitted through the national grid.

When power supply from the national grid is interrupted, EKEDP’s electricity allocation drops to zero megawatts, resulting in a total blackout across its coverage areas.

Like other electricity distribution companies, EKEDP does not generate electricity. It depends entirely on power generated by generation companies and transmitted through the national grid before it can distribute electricity to consumers.

As a result, any disruption to the national grid immediately affects power distribution and significantly impacts the company’s operations and revenue.

In a similar incident, EKEDP announced a nationwide blackout in March 2024 following the collapse of the national grid.

At the time, the company said it was working with its partners to restore electricity supply across its network.
