2027 Governorship Campaigns Begin as Candidates Put Security, Jobs and Economy at Centre

Nigeria’s 2027 governorship contests have moved into full campaign mode, with candidates across several states unveiling programmes focused on security, agriculture, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare and economic development.

The formal governorship campaign period began on Wednesday, September 9, opening another major phase in the countdown to the 2027 general elections.

Candidates from the North-West to the South-East and South-West are already attempting to frame their campaigns around local economic and governance concerns rather than relying exclusively on national party politics.

Ogun, Abia Campaigns Take Off

In Ogun State, Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu formally launched his campaign in Abeokuta.

Adebutu is campaigning with Yemi Showunmi-Kolapo as his running mate and has placed issues including local government autonomy among the themes of his campaign.

The PDP has also begun its governorship campaign in Abia State, where Dr Kelechi Anosike is flying the party’s flag.

The contests are unfolding against a broader political environment in which economic hardship, insecurity, infrastructure and employment are likely to feature prominently in voter decisions.

Lagos APC Mobilises Across 57 Councils

The APC has also begun its governorship and House of Assembly campaign in Lagos State.

State chairman Cornelius Ojelabi directed party structures to intensify grassroots mobilisation across Lagos’ 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

The party says its campaign will emphasise continuity, consolidation and its record in government.

The strategy reflects the importance of grassroots organisation in state elections, where local political structures can play a major role in mobilisation and turnout.

Across the country, however, campaign promises will increasingly face scrutiny over implementation.

Nigeria’s economic conditions mean voters are likely to demand more detailed explanations of how candidates intend to finance programmes involving wages, infrastructure, healthcare and agriculture.

That could make the 2027 governorship contests as much a competition over economic credibility as political popularity.
