FirstBank’s Capital Recovery Supports Positive Fitch Outlook

First Bank of Nigeria Limited has been included among the Nigerian lenders whose outlooks Fitch Ratings revised to Positive from Stable, with the agency’s assessment drawing attention to improving credit prospects and the bank’s capital recovery.

The rating action was reported on October 15 as part of a wider reassessment of Nigeria’s banking sector following improvements in the country’s sovereign outlook and macroeconomic environment.

Fitch maintained the affected institutions’ Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings at ‘B’, meaning the positive outlook indicates improved expectations rather than an immediate upgrade.

FirstBank’s capital position is an important element of its current financial profile. According to Fitch reporting published on October 15, the bank’s capital adequacy ratio fell below the applicable minimum requirement of 15 per cent at the end of 2025, following a sharp increase in impaired loans.

The bank subsequently restored compliance, with its capital adequacy ratio reaching 16.7 per cent at the end of June 2026. Fitch attributed the recovery to strong profitability and a relatively small capital raising.

The development highlights the importance of capital buffers in protecting banks against unexpected losses and maintaining their capacity to support customers.

A capital adequacy ratio measures a bank’s regulatory capital relative to its risk-weighted assets. While a higher ratio generally provides a stronger cushion against potential losses, the quality of capital, the composition of assets and the scale of problem loans also matter.

FirstBank’s recovery therefore represents an important development, but maintaining that position will require continued attention to loan quality, provisioning, risk concentration and sustainable earnings.

The wider banking environment is also changing following the CBN’s recapitalisation programme. Stronger capital positions can improve lenders’ ability to finance businesses and participate in larger transactions, provided lending standards remain prudent.

For FirstBank, the next phase will involve sustaining capital compliance while strengthening asset quality and managing the risks associated with lending to households, businesses and other borrowers.

The positive outlook could also influence how investors assess the bank’s credit prospects. However, it should not be treated as a substitute for examining the institution’s published financial statements and subsequent regulatory disclosures.

FirstBank’s ability to sustain profitability while controlling impaired loans will be central to its long-term performance. The bank must demonstrate that its improved capital position can withstand further economic pressures without undermining its lending capacity.

The Fitch assessment consequently places renewed focus on the relationship between capital strength, credit quality and the resilience of Nigeria’s banking sector.
