Anthem announced on February 19 that it has energized the Gamma B Main Transmission Substation (MTS), a pivotal infrastructure project linking its Northern Cluster wind developments to South Africa’s national grid.
Built over 20 months on behalf of the National Transmission Company South Africa, the substation features 400 kV and 132 kV infrastructure, a 500 MVA transformer, and space for future connections. Strategically located between Victoria West and Murraysburg on the border of the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces, the facility will evacuate electricity generated by the Umsinde, Khangela, and Ishwati Emoyeni wind farms.
These three projects, under construction, represent 420 megawatts of contracted capacity, with power purchase agreements signed with industrial clients including Sibanye-Stillwater, Richards Bay Minerals, and NOA Group Trading. Full commissioning of the wind farms is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
In a statement, Anthem said the energization marks the completion of the delivery phase for this critical national infrastructure. The remaining work involves final construction and the grid connection of the wind farms.
Launched in September 2025, Anthem manages a secured renewable portfolio exceeding 2.7 gigawatts, combining generation, operational services, and industrial power contracts, supporting South Africa’s push to expand clean energy in a grid still largely dependent on coal.
