Ethiopian Airlines made history at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, as it became the first African carrier to operate the cutting-edge Airbus A350-1000. This milestone is not only a triumph for the airline but also a significant advancement for African aviation as a whole.
The aircraft, which landed to a spectacular water cannon salute, was met with a warm welcome by dignitaries, aviation professionals, and enthusiastic passengers. Led by Captain Sisay Kebede, the flight carried 272 passengers, offering luxurious seating in 15 Business Class and 257 Economy Class sections.
The arrival was celebrated with a series of festivities, including a special ceremony, a cake-cutting, and an exclusive aircraft tour. Wondwossen Beyene, Ethiopian Airlines’ General Manager in Nigeria, described the A350-1000 as a “game-changer” for the continent’s air travel industry.
He emphasized the aircraft’s enhanced passenger comfort, environmental efficiency, and expanded cargo capacity—key elements that will help position Africa as a formidable player in the global aviation landscape.
With three more A350-1000s set to join its fleet, Ethiopian Airlines is not only pushing the boundaries of modern aviation but is also ensuring that Africa’s skies are more connected, efficient, and ready for the future of global air travel. This momentous event underscores the airline’s leadership in elevating Africa’s aviation sector to new heights.
