FG Approves Purchase of Two Communication Satellites to Boost Nigeria’s Digital Economy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the purchase of two new communication satellites to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and advance President Bola Tinubu’s plan to grow Nigeria’s economy to $1 trillion.

The announcement was made by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Mr. Bosun Tijani, on Wednesday in Abuja during a press conference marking Global Privacy Day 2026, organized by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

Tijani described the approval as a significant shift in Nigeria’s digital strategy, noting that the country is currently the only West African nation without active communication satellites. He said the new satellites would close this gap and enhance connectivity across the country.

He stated:
“As you know, Mr. President has been very clear about his ambition to build a $1tn economy, and digital technology is central to achieving that vision. Most importantly, the President has now approved that we should procure two new satellites, ensuring that we can use them to connect.”

The move is expected to accelerate digital transformation, improve broadband access, and support the government’s broader objectives of economic diversification and technological advancement.
