The Federal Government has deployed a select group of Treasury Officers from across Nigeria to oversee and safeguard the finances of more than 40 donor-funded development projects.
At the retreat of the Federal Projects Financial Management Department (FPFMD) held in Abuja, the Acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGoF), Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, issued a strong call for financial discipline and innovative fund management. Ogunjimi, represented by Akuagwu Chucks, Director of Finance and Administration at the Office of the Accountant-General (OAGF), reminded the officers of the critical nature of their new roles.
“You have been entrusted with not just public funds, but borrowed funds which must be repaid in time, either in ours or that of our children,” he stated.
He emphasized the importance of accountability, stressing that the selected officers must act as frontline custodians of funds meant for vital national and donor-backed projects.
The AGoF described the assignment as a privilege, noting that the officers were carefully chosen from among many qualified Treasury staff across the country. Their responsibility, he said, goes beyond mere bookkeeping — it involves ensuring that every naira is spent efficiently, transparently, and in accordance with the objectives of each project.
This move is part of the federal government’s broader effort to strengthen public financial management, particularly in sectors funded by international development partners.
