FG Targets 200 New Telecom Sites Before December, Plans Connectivity for 20m Nigerians

The Federal Government says at least 200 new telecommunications sites will become operational before December 2026, marking the first major phase of a nationwide infrastructure programme designed to bring mobile and internet connectivity to more than 20 million Nigerians in underserved and unserved communities.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani disclosed the target on Monday during the commissioning of the new headquarters of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, in Abuja.

The 200 sites form part of a much larger Federal Government programme to deploy approximately 3,700 telecommunications towers across communities that currently lack adequate network coverage.

20 Million Nigerians Could Gain Connectivity

According to Tijani, each tower is expected to serve communities containing between 5,000 and 10,000 residents.

Once the wider 3,700-site project is completed, the government estimates that more than 20 million Nigerians who are currently disconnected or poorly served could gain access to telecommunications services.

The scale of that potential reach is significant.

Nigeria has one of Africa’s largest telecommunications markets, but connectivity remains uneven.

Major cities such as Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt generally have extensive mobile coverage, while many rural and remote communities still experience weak signals, unreliable internet connections or no meaningful telecommunications service at all.

That digital divide affects far more than people’s ability to make phone calls.

Internet access increasingly determines whether Nigerians can participate in digital banking, online education, e-commerce, remote work, government services and the country’s expanding technology economy.

First Tower Already Deployed

The minister said the first tower under the programme has already been deployed in Kura Village outside Abuja, while work has also commenced in the Niger Delta.

The programme followed a directive from President Bola Tinubu to expand telecommunications coverage to communities that remain outside Nigeria’s existing digital infrastructure.

The decision to prioritise underserved areas could also improve the economics of extending networks into communities that private telecommunications operators might otherwise consider commercially difficult to serve.

Building towers in sparsely populated or remote areas can be expensive, particularly when operators must also provide electricity, security and backhaul connectivity.

Government-supported infrastructure can reduce some of those barriers.

90,000km Fibre Network Forms Bigger Plan

The tower rollout is only one component of Abuja’s broader digital infrastructure strategy.

Tijani said the Federal Government is also investing in a planned 90,000-kilometre fibre-optic network intended to significantly expand Nigeria’s broadband backbone.

Fibre infrastructure is particularly important because mobile towers still require high-capacity connections to move internet traffic.

Building thousands of towers without sufficient fibre or other backhaul infrastructure could increase coverage without delivering the high-speed broadband increasingly required by businesses and digital services.

The combination of fibre and mobile infrastructure therefore matters.

The fibre backbone provides the high-capacity national network, while towers extend that connectivity closer to households and businesses.

Connectivity Becoming Economic Infrastructure

The government’s programme also reflects a broader shift in how telecommunications infrastructure is viewed.

Internet connectivity is increasingly becoming comparable to roads and electricity as a basic requirement for economic participation.

A farmer in a rural community can use connectivity to obtain market information and receive digital payments.

Small businesses can advertise and sell products beyond their immediate communities.

Students can access educational platforms, while residents can use digital banking and government services without travelling long distances.

Improved rural coverage could also expand the potential customer base for Nigeria’s fintech, e-commerce and digital-services companies.

Execution Will Determine Impact

The ambition is substantial, but delivering 3,700 sites will require financing, coordination with telecommunications operators, security and reliable energy.

Vandalism and theft have historically affected telecommunications infrastructure in parts of Nigeria, while unreliable grid electricity means many sites require alternative power systems.

Government will also need to ensure that infrastructure deployment translates into affordable services.

Coverage alone provides limited benefit if households cannot afford smartphones or the data required to use the internet.

The immediate milestone is therefore the government’s promise to have at least 200 sites active before December.

If that target is achieved and the wider programme proceeds as planned, the initiative could become one of Nigeria’s most consequential rural telecommunications expansions — potentially bringing more than 20 million people closer to the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
