The Federal Government has stepped into the ongoing electricity tariff controversy following the recent decision by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) to cut electricity tariffs.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, called for improved coordination among stakeholders in the power sector, cautioning that a lack of alignment between federal and state regulators could fuel conflict and threaten the stability of Nigeria’s national grid.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with state commissioners for energy on the development of the state electricity markets, Adelabu emphasised the need for synergy to ensure access to reliable and affordable electricity for all Nigerians.
“Our common goal is to ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to reliable electricity that powers homes, businesses, industries, and drives our collective economic growth,” the Minister said.
He stressed that harmonising regulatory frameworks would not only optimise resources but also boost investor confidence in the electricity sector.
“A fragmented regulatory environment could discourage investment and slow down the sector’s growth,” Adelabu added.
The intervention comes amid growing tension between state and federal authorities over who has the mandate to set electricity tariffs in light of ongoing power sector reforms.
