NERC Orders Full Integration of Power Plants into National SCADA System by December 2025

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a mandatory directive requiring all grid-connected power generation companies to fully integrate into the national Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) by December 31, 2025.

The directive, outlined in a regulatory framework titled “Order on the Mandatory Integration of Grid-Connected Generating Units into the New SCADA/EMS for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,” was made public on Wednesday in Abuja.

Signed by NERC Chairman Garba Sanusi and Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni, the order took effect from May 22, 2025, and aims to enhance real-time monitoring, optimize load dispatch, and reduce system collapses by ensuring full visibility of generation assets across the country.

The commission warned that failure to comply will attract stiff financial penalties and may result in disconnection from the national grid.

In recent years, Nigeria’s national grid has suffered repeated collapses, often blamed on inadequate coordination between generation, transmission, and distribution systems. A fully integrated SCADA/EMS, which acts as the grid’s central nervous system, is essential for automated control, fault detection, and live operational management.

The new order is seen as a critical move to stabilize the power sector and modernize grid operations for improved national electricity supply.
