The Nigerian equities market extended its losing streak to seven consecutive trading sessions on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as renewed selling pressure in oil and gas stocks, led by Aradel Holdings, pushed the market deeper into correction territory.
The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell 0.36% to close at 240,750.47 points, compared with 241,611.23 points recorded on Tuesday.
Market capitalisation also declined by approximately N555.68 billion, falling from N155.97 trillion to N155.42 trillion.
Despite the latest losses, the market remained firmly positive for the year, with its year-to-date return moderating to 54.71%.
The latest decline extends the market’s correction from its recent high of 248,529.75 points recorded on Monday, August 10. Since then, the ASI has shed 7,779.28 points, representing a 3.13% decline across seven consecutive sessions.
Market capitalisation has similarly fallen by about N5 trillion, from N160.42 trillion on August 10 to N155.42 trillion on Wednesday.
Aradel Holdings was the biggest heavyweight drag on the market, plunging 9.99% to N1,374.20 from N1,526.80. The stock lost N152.60 per share and recorded the second-largest percentage decline among listed equities, while exerting significant pressure on the Oil & Gas Index.
NGX Group also declined 2.34% to N125.00, losing N3.00 per share. GTCO eased 0.08% to N127.90, Fidelity Bank fell 0.24% to N20.50, while ETI declined 0.36% to N69.75.
On the positive side, UAC Nigeria emerged as the strongest blue-chip gainer, rising 6.56% to N177.85 from N166.90 and adding N10.95 per share.
UBA gained 2.22% to N46.00, Zenith Bank advanced 1.64% to N124.00, Access Holdings rose 0.93% to N27.15, while Dangote Sugar Refinery gained 1.23% to N69.85.
The broader gainers’ list was led by Haldane McCall, which climbed 10% to N3.52. Wapic Insurance gained 8.44% to N2.44, while AVA Capital and Caverton Offshore Support Group advanced 6.29% and 5.32%, respectively.
At the other end of the market, International Energy Insurance fell 10% to N4.77, Universal Insurance declined 9.41% to N0.77, Red Star Express dropped 9.26% to N14.70, and Royal Exchange fell 8.62% to N1.06.
Sectoral performance was mixed, although oil and gas stocks bore the brunt of the selloff.
The NGX Oil & Gas Index plunged 4.63% to 4,960.82 points from 5,201.49 points, driven largely by the sharp decline in Aradel Holdings.
The Commodity Index also fell 3.19%, while the Insurance Index declined 0.88% to 1,102.71 points. The Consumer Goods Index eased 0.31% to 4,037.49 points.
The Banking Index bucked the broader downturn, rising 0.54% to 2,503.67 points from 2,490.17 points, supported by gains in Zenith Bank and UBA.
The Industrial sector ended the session relatively flat.
Market breadth was evenly balanced, with 27 stocks gaining and 27 declining, producing a 1.0x gainers-to-losers ratio. The balanced breadth suggests that Wednesday’s decline was driven more by sector rotation and weakness in heavyweight stocks than by broad-based selling.
Trading activity strengthened significantly during the session. Total volume jumped 177.65% to 1.19 billion shares, while market turnover increased 37.62% to N37.82 billion.
However, the number of deals fell 3.19% to 34,546 transactions.
FTG Insurance was the most traded stock by volume, with 610.68 million shares changing hands, while MTN Nigeria led trading by value at N8.12 billion.
The session highlights continued profit-taking following the market’s strong rally earlier in August. Investors appeared to rotate into selected beaten-down stocks such as UAC Nigeria, Wapic Insurance and AVA Capital, while reducing exposure to recent market outperformers, particularly in the oil and gas segment.
The 4.63% decline in the Oil & Gas Index represents one of its sharpest single-session falls of the year and marks a notable reversal for a sector that has contributed significantly to the Nigerian equities market’s gains in 2026.
With the ASI now more than 3% below its August 10 peak, investors will be watching whether the recent correction stabilises or extends into another trading session.
