The MV Great Lagos, among the world’s largest containers cum Roll-on-Roll-off (RoRo) vessels, made its arrival at the Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos on Monday, carrying around 2000 containers and 2500 vehicles.
Named after the city of Lagos, the vessel, valued at approximately $100 million, is on its maiden voyage to three West African countries, with Nigeria being the first port of call. The ship sails under the flag of Italy and is owned by the Grimaldi Group.
Officials present to receive the colossal vessel included Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola; Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko, and the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking at a civil reception on-board the ship, highlighted the significance of MV Great Lagos’s visit to the Tin-Can Island Port as an expression of international confidence in Nigeria.
He also commended the Grimaldi Group for its investment in Lagos State, underscoring the vessel’s contribution to maritime activities and trade in the region.
