Nigerian Breweries Plc has revealed plans to explore the reopening of its dormant Awo-Omamma brewery in Imo State, as part of efforts to stimulate local economic growth and foster industrial revival in the region.
The company disclosed this during the commissioning and handover of a two-ton per day cassava processing plant in Awo-Omamma, which it constructed and donated to the community under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Thibaut Boidin, said the cassava processing facility was designed to create direct and indirect employment for local residents, with an estimated annual revenue generation of ₦500 million.
“This facility marks a major step in fostering economic growth and empowering the Awo-Omamma community,” Boidin said.
“With continued progress and stability in Imo State, we are optimistic that the conditions will be right for us to consider capital investments to upgrade and restart the Awo-Omamma brewery.”
He highlighted Awo-Omamma’s growing potential as a hub for cassava processing, adding that Nigerian Breweries remains committed to supporting agro-industrial development and sustainable livelihoods across its host communities.
The Imo State Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Investment, Barr. Rex Anunobi, who represented the state government, commended Nigerian Breweries for its continued partnership and urged the company to reopen the brewery, assuring full government support.
“We are committed to working with Nigerian Breweries to overcome past challenges,” Anunobi said.
“The state government has introduced several reforms — including reduced taxation, improved road networks, and streamlined business processes — to attract and retain investors.”
Other top company executives at the ceremony included Supply Chain Director, Mr. Federico Agressi, and Corporate Affairs Director, Mr. Uzo Odenigbo.
Government representatives in attendance were Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment; Dr. Ikechukwu Ekeh, Special Adviser on Tourism; and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
The event underscored Nigerian Breweries’ long-term vision to support local sourcing, promote agribusiness, and strengthen community development in Imo State.
