Nigeria’s Broadband Penetration Hits 57.4% as Subscriptions Rise to 124.4 Million

Nigeria’s broadband penetration has climbed to 57.4 per cent, with subscriptions reaching approximately 124.4 million, highlighting the continuing expansion of internet connectivity across Africa’s most populous country.

Latest industry figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission show penetration increased from 48.81 per cent in August 2025 to 57.4 per cent in July 2026.

Broadband subscriptions increased from about 105.2 million to 124.4 million during the same period, representing an addition of more than 19 million subscriptions.

The expansion comes as internet connectivity becomes increasingly important to payments, entertainment, commerce, education and business operations.

Broadband Growth Accelerates in 2026

The figures show relatively consistent expansion during the first seven months of this year.

Broadband penetration increased from 53.07 per cent in January to 53.86 per cent in February and 54.30 per cent in March.

It subsequently reached 55.67 per cent in April, 56.11 per cent in May, 56.79 per cent in June and 57.40 per cent in July.

Subscriptions similarly increased from about 115 million in January to 124.4 million by July.

Data consumption is also rising rapidly.

NCC figures cited in an Independence anniversary assessment show data consumption increased from around 1.13 million terabytes in July 2025 to 1.66 million terabytes in July 2026, an increase of nearly 47 per cent.

Smartphones Reshape Digital Economy

Greater broadband availability is being accompanied by rising smartphone adoption.

KPMG estimates that Nigeria’s smartphone penetration increased from 64 per cent in 2023 to 75 per cent in 2025, expanding the population capable of accessing more sophisticated digital services.

That combination has consequences across the economy.

More affordable smartphones and improved broadband coverage allow consumers to use digital banking, social media, e-commerce, streaming, online learning and other internet-based services.

For businesses, expanding connectivity increases the potential customer base for digital products.

Infrastructure Must Keep Pace

Rapid growth also places pressure on telecommunications infrastructure.

Networks must accommodate increasing traffic while operators invest in fibre, base stations, spectrum and data centres.

The quality of broadband connections will consequently become as important as the number of subscriptions.

Nigeria’s next connectivity challenge is therefore not simply bringing more people online.

It is ensuring that growing broadband adoption is matched by sufficient network capacity, affordability and reliability to allow consumers and businesses to use increasingly data-intensive services.
