The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing a unified culture of compliance across the sector through stronger legal engagement and transparent governance.
Speaking at the opening of a two-day General Counsel and Legal Advisers Forum in Abuja, the Authority Chief Executive (ACE), Farouk Ahmed, highlighted the critical role of legal professionals in ensuring that operators adhere to all rules, regulations, and standards in the midstream and downstream petroleum value chain.
“The energy sector operates in a complex and volatile environment, and legal officers play a vital role in ensuring optimal regulatory compliance,” Ahmed said.
He noted that a robust and enabling legal framework, coupled with shared responsibility and accountability, is necessary for the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
The forum, a flagship industry engagement initiative of the NMDPRA, is designed to bring together chief legal officers, general counsel, and in-house legal teams from licensed operators. It provides a strategic platform for dialogue, policy clarification, and collaborative problem-solving between regulators and legal practitioners.
According to the Authority, strengthening the legal dimension of regulation will help foster transparency, operational efficiency, and industry best practices in line with the evolving demands of Nigeria’s energy landscape.
