The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has refuted claims circulating on social media platforms suggesting a reduction in the pump prices of petrol and diesel. In a statement issued by the spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, the company labeled the rumors as false and urged Nigerians to disregard them entirely.
The erroneous posts, which surfaced on various social media platforms on Tuesday and Wednesday, purported that NNPC had lowered the pump price of petrol below N600 and adjusted the price of diesel below N900. However, NNPC clarified that there had been no such adjustments and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the current supply sufficiency of petroleum products across all its retail stations nationwide.
“The NNPC Limited wishes to clarify rumours suggesting a price adjustment for Premium Motor Spirit and Automotive Gas Oil at its retail stations nationwide,” stated the spokesperson. “The company asserts that these reports are false and urges Nigerians to disregard them entirely. NNPC Ltd reaffirms its commitment to sustaining the current sufficiency in petroleum products supply across all its retail stations in the country.”
The clarification comes amidst ongoing concerns over the high cost of fuel, which surged following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023. The price of petrol skyrocketed to over N600 from about N200 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. As Nigerians continue to grapple with the impact of rising fuel prices, NNPC’s denial of pump price reductions underscores the need for accurate information and transparency in the petroleum sector.
