The Federal Government will on Friday close applications for a free technical and vocational training programme in Enugu State covering artificial intelligence, solar installation and fashion design, as part of efforts to use practical skills development to tackle unemployment and poverty.
The initiative is being implemented under the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy, NPRGS, by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
Applications for the Enugu phase close today, September 11.
The programme is designed around a relatively straightforward objective: equip participants with practical capabilities that can translate into employment, self-employment or new businesses rather than limiting intervention to classroom-based training.
AI Training Goes Beyond Basic Digital Skills
The artificial intelligence component covers several areas with growing relevance to the technology industry.
Participants are expected to receive exposure to AI, machine learning, programming, deep learning, data analytics and problem-solving.
The inclusion of these areas reflects the rapid transformation taking place in the labour market as AI becomes integrated into banking, telecommunications, software development, media, professional services and other industries.
For Nigeria, developing workers capable of participating in that transformation is becoming increasingly important.
The country’s large youth population creates a substantial potential digital workforce, but converting that demographic advantage into economic value requires practical skills and opportunities.
Solar Installation Targets Growing Energy Economy
The solar component addresses a different but equally significant Nigerian economic challenge.
Participants will receive practical training relating to solar-energy systems and installation.
Demand for alternative power solutions has grown as households and businesses seek ways to reduce their dependence on expensive generators and unreliable grid electricity.
That creates employment opportunities for technicians capable of installing, maintaining and troubleshooting solar systems.
Renewable-energy training can therefore serve two objectives simultaneously: expanding the pool of skilled workers while supporting the adoption of alternative electricity solutions.
Fashion Programme Adds Entrepreneurship
The third component focuses on fashion design.
Training will cover pattern making, sewing, garment construction, fashion illustration and entrepreneurship, according to details of the programme.
Fashion remains an important part of Nigeria’s creative economy, with relatively low barriers to small-scale entrepreneurship compared with some capital-intensive industries.
However, technical ability alone does not guarantee that a participant can establish a sustainable enterprise.
Including entrepreneurship training could help beneficiaries understand pricing, customer acquisition and the commercial side of converting vocational skills into income.
From Training to Employment
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, Dr Abiola Arogundade, said the programme is aimed at Enugu residents seeking vocational and digital capabilities that can improve employability or help them establish and expand businesses.
The initiative is built around the theme, “Skills Today. Livelihoods Tomorrow. Less Poverty.”
That message captures the government’s broader argument that poverty reduction cannot rely exclusively on financial assistance.
Skills capable of producing sustainable income can provide a longer-term route towards economic independence.
The more important measure, however, will come after the training.
Government skills programmes ultimately need to be assessed by how many participants successfully move into employment, establish sustainable businesses or increase their earnings.
If that transition is achieved, programmes combining emerging technologies such as AI and solar energy with established industries such as fashion could provide a model for linking vocational education more directly with Nigeria’s changing labour market.
