Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Bello Shehu, has disclosed that, out of Nigeria’s population of over 200 million people, only 40 million are currently contributing to the nation’s tax revenue. Speaking with Daily Sun in Abuja, Shehu emphasized that the aim of the Tax Reform Act and the Revenue Committee is to expand the tax base by incorporating the informal sector and informal economy.
He stated, “We are a member of that committee, and we have presented our perspective. Meetings will be organized, and we will convey our ideas to enrich the discussions. Our goal is to create a society where more individuals contribute to tax revenues, allowing the funds to be used for improved services and infrastructure, benefiting everyone.”
Shehu further highlighted that a significant number of Nigerians and businesses remain outside the tax net. He questioned why someone earning approximately N600,000 annually could afford to import a car worth N40 million. He also pointed out that certain aspects of taxation are yet to be enforced by the government.
