President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Olayemi Cardoso, the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as the chairman of the newly constituted Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The announcement came through a letter addressed to the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Wednesday’s plenary.
The president also appointed 11 other individuals as members of the MPC. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate. Tinubu emphasized the urgency of the confirmation process in his letter to the Senate, urging swift action on the matter.
In another significant appointment, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri has been named as the Director General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). This move underscores the president’s commitment to addressing healthcare challenges in the country.
Furthermore, Tinubu nominated Honorable Yomi Fasua to replace Honorable Kunle Sobukola. Sobukola had previously been confirmed by the Senate for the position of Commissioner of the National Population Commission, representing Ogun State.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in the abilities of the appointees and emphasized the importance of their roles in shaping and implementing monetary policies that will contribute to the economic stability and growth of Nigeria.
The president’s letter to the Senate referred to Section 12 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act 2007, which provides the legal framework for the appointment and confirmation of members of the Monetary Policy Committee.
As these appointments unfold, the nation watches closely for the Senate’s confirmation process and the subsequent impact these individuals will have on Nigeria’s economic and healthcare sectors.
