REA to Launch Renewable Asset Management Company

REA Deploys Mini-Grids to Strengthen Power Supply in Underserved Communities

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is set to launch the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) on August 26, 2026, as part of efforts to promote long-term investment and sustainability in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.

REA Managing Director, Abubakar Aliyu, said RAMCO was designed to provide a specialised platform for the professional management, optimisation and long-term sustainability of renewable energy assets.

In a statement on Thursday, Aliyu described RAMCO as Nigeria’s strategic response to the need for long-term energy financing, saying the country requires institutions capable of connecting renewable energy infrastructure with long-term private capital.

“The agency is set to launch RAMCO on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Abuja, heralding a new era of advancing distributed renewable energy access in Nigeria,” Aliyu said.

He said Nigeria has significant opportunities in renewable energy, supported by its large population, abundant solar resources, growing ecosystem of renewable energy developers and the legal framework established by the Electricity Act 2023.

According to the REA boss, RAMCO could serve as a bridge between public infrastructure and private investment if properly structured and managed with commercial discipline.

He said the initiative would help shift the sector’s focus beyond infrastructure deployment to the long-term sustainability, productivity and financial performance of renewable energy assets.

Aliyu explained that the model could allow mature renewable energy assets to be refinanced or have their capital recycled, subject to appropriate commercial and regulatory structures.

Proceeds from such transactions could potentially be deployed into new renewable energy projects, creating a cycle of investment that supports continued expansion of electricity access.

The REA managing director said this approach could reduce Nigeria’s dependence on government budgets, sovereign borrowing and development finance institutions to fund the expansion of electricity infrastructure.

He also identified asset maintenance as a critical challenge for renewable energy projects, noting that solar panels, batteries, inverters and other components have different operating lifespans and require regular maintenance and replacement.

According to Aliyu, effective renewable energy asset management must therefore extend beyond physical infrastructure.

It must also cover equipment maintenance, revenue collection, customer demand, operator performance and the overall financial health of projects.

He stressed that attracting long-term capital would be essential because Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure needs are too extensive to be financed by government alone.

Aliyu said the country’s renewable energy strategy must therefore focus not only on increasing installed capacity but also on ensuring that existing infrastructure remains productive while creating mechanisms to mobilise additional capital.

He said RAMCO’s success would ultimately be measured by the number of renewable energy assets kept productive, the amount of private capital attracted, distressed projects restored and capital recycled into new electrification projects.

The launch is expected to mark a shift towards a more commercially focused approach to managing Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy infrastructure, with greater emphasis on asset performance, sustainability and long-term capital mobilisation.
