Rising Costs Force Nigerian Tech Businesses to Rethink Expansion Strategies

Nigeria’s technology sector is facing renewed questions about the sustainability of digital business models as currency pressures, expensive infrastructure and tighter funding conditions weigh on operators.

A report published identified five prominent technology businesses that had exited Nigeria, wound down services or withdrawn major business lines during the first 10 months of 2026.

The developments involved ride-hailing and mobility businesses Uber and Moove, fintech startups Gigbanc and Chimoney, and Onafriq’s Baxi agent-banking business. Although their circumstances differ, the changes point to the commercial pressures facing technology companies operating in Nigeria.

Growth does not always translate into profitability

Technology companies often depend on substantial early investment to acquire customers, build infrastructure and establish market share. However, the ability to attract users does not automatically guarantee a sustainable business.

Operators must also manage payment processing expenses, staffing, technology infrastructure, customer acquisition, regulatory compliance and the cost of maintaining reliable services.

Foreign exchange pressures can make imported equipment and overseas technology services more expensive, while businesses that depend on frequent transactions or physical distribution may face additional operating challenges.

For companies with limited funding reserves, these costs can make expansion difficult, particularly when customer revenue does not grow quickly enough to cover expenditure.

Investors demand stronger business fundamentals

The latest developments come against a more complicated funding backdrop. Nigeria’s startup ecosystem attracted $635 million during the first nine months of 2026, but four major transactions accounted for approximately 69 per cent of that amount.

The figures suggest that investment remains available for established businesses capable of attracting large funding rounds, even as access to capital may remain uneven across the wider startup market.

For founders, the lesson is increasingly clear: expansion strategies must account for local operating conditions, customer purchasing power and the path to profitability.

Businesses may need to focus more closely on core products, improve operational efficiency, strengthen recurring revenue and prioritise markets where they can deliver services sustainably.

The shift does not necessarily signal the end of Nigeria’s technology growth story. Instead, it highlights the importance of building digital businesses that can survive beyond fundraising cycles and deliver lasting value to customers.

For investors, regulators and entrepreneurs, the central question is whether Nigeria’s technology ecosystem can combine innovation and scale with durable commercial performance.
