President Bola Tinubu has requested the Senate to screen and confirm four individuals recently appointed as members of the Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The President’s request was conveyed in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.
The nominees for confirmation are Emomotimi Agama, Frana Chukwuogor, Bola Ajomale, and Samiya Hassan-Usman. Agama has been nominated for the position of Director-General, while Chukwuogor is slated to serve as Executive Commissioner (Legal and Enforcement) of the SEC. Ajomale has been nominated for the position of Executive Commissioner (Operations), and Hassan-Usman has been appointed as Executive Commissioner (Corporate Services).
President Tinubu had previously approved the appointment of seven individuals as members of the SEC in April. However, only four names were transmitted to the Senate for confirmation. The President did not provide reasons for excluding the other three professionals in the letter.
In the communication to the Senate, President Tinubu stated that the appointments were made in accordance with the provisions of section 3 and 5 (1) of the Investment and Security Act of 2007.
The letter, titled “Confirmation of Appointment of the Director-General and Commissioners of the Securities and Exchange Commission,” outlined the compliance with the relevant legal framework for the appointments.
Following the President’s request, the Senate is expected to commence the screening process to confirm the appointed individuals, ensuring the SEC’s continued effective operation and regulatory oversight in the Nigerian financial market.
