Senegal President to Meet IMF Chief in Washington

FG Raises 2025 GDP Growth Projection to 5%, Above IMF’s 3.4% Forecast

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is scheduled to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The meeting will focus on Senegal’s recent economic developments and its ongoing economic reform programme.

The meeting comes at an important time for Senegal as the government works to address its debt challenges and restore confidence in the country’s finances. In September, Senegal and the IMF reached a staff-level agreement on a $2.2 billion, three-year lending programme, although the agreement still requires approval from IMF management and the Executive Board.

Senegal’s financial situation has been under pressure following the discovery of previously undisclosed government debt. The IMF has estimated that the country’s debt had reached 132% of GDP by the end of 2024, creating the need for major reforms to restore debt sustainability.

President Faye is on a working visit to Washington from September 14 to 15. He is expected to travel to Abu Dhabi from September 16 to 17 for an official visit after his US trip.

The discussions with the IMF chief could therefore be important for Senegal’s efforts to secure financial support, improve its economic management and implement reforms aimed at putting the country’s finances on a more sustainable path.
