Fidelity Bank Plc is strengthening its women-focused health and wellness activities through a breast cancer awareness campaign organised under its HerFidelity initiative in collaboration with Foremost Radiology.
The initiative, reported on October 15, is designed to encourage women to recognise possible warning signs, seek qualified medical advice and understand the importance of timely evaluation.
As part of the programme, the partners have scheduled an online webinar for Friday, October 16, at 10 a.m. West African Time. The session, themed “Beyond the Lump: The Role of Awareness and Imaging in Early Breast Cancer Detection,” is expected to feature a consultant radiation and clinical oncologist.
The webinar will address breast cancer awareness, possible symptoms, medical imaging and the importance of obtaining professional evaluation when unusual changes occur.
Potential warning signs can include a new lump or thickening, changes in breast size or shape, skin or nipple changes and unusual nipple discharge. Such symptoms do not necessarily indicate cancer, but they should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
The campaign reflects a broader approach to women’s empowerment that combines financial inclusion with education, entrepreneurship support and personal wellbeing.
Through HerFidelity, the bank seeks to support women with access to finance, business education, capacity building and opportunities to develop sustainable enterprises. The health and wellness component extends that approach beyond economic participation.
The initiative also plans to take awareness activities into local communities. According to the reported programme, a breast-health screening and awareness outreach is scheduled for Oyingbo Market in Lagos on October 25.
Taking health information into busy commercial communities could help reach women whose work and family responsibilities make it difficult to participate in conventional awareness programmes.
However, awareness activities are most effective when they are connected to accessible medical services, appropriate screening guidance and timely follow-up for people who require further assessment.
The bank’s initiative comes as organisations increasingly incorporate health and social welfare programmes into broader environmental, social and governance commitments.
For women who operate small businesses or work in the informal economy, health concerns can also have economic consequences, affecting income, business continuity and household finances.
By linking awareness with its women-focused financial inclusion programme, Fidelity Bank is seeking to address some of these wider challenges while encouraging women to take informed steps regarding their health.
The success of the campaign will depend on participation, the quality of information delivered and the extent to which women can access appropriate professional services after the awareness sessions.
The initiative provides a current example of how a financial institution can use its community networks to support public awareness beyond traditional banking services.
