Telecommunications company Airtel Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery for its 183.5 million customers, as the group seeks to strengthen customer experience through continued technology investment and operational improvements.
The company reiterated the commitment during Customer Service Week, according to a report published by Nigeria CommunicationsWeek on October 7.
The announcement comes as African telecommunications operators face increasing pressure to provide dependable connectivity and digital services to a growing customer base.
Customer Growth Raises Service Expectations
Airtel Africa’s customer base reached 183.5 million in its financial year ended March 31, 2026, representing growth of 10.5 per cent.
The company also reported strong expansion in data services, reflecting the growing importance of mobile internet access.
As customers increasingly use smartphones for financial transactions, business, education and entertainment, telecommunications networks are becoming more central to everyday economic activity.
That changes what subscribers expect from operators.
Voice coverage alone is no longer sufficient.
Customers increasingly judge service quality by internet speed, network reliability, transaction performance and the ease of resolving complaints.
Data Becomes Core Revenue Driver
Airtel Africa’s 2026 financial results showed data revenue growth of 35.2 per cent in constant currency.
The company also reported approximately 91 million data users, while smartphone penetration approached 50 per cent across its operations.
These figures illustrate how mobile operators are evolving from predominantly voice-based businesses into digital connectivity providers.
For Airtel, maintaining service quality across that transition requires continued network investment.
Infrastructure Investment Supports Expansion
The telecommunications group reported adding more than 3,250 network sites during its 2026 financial year, while its fibre network expanded to nearly 82,000 kilometres.
It also outlined a capital expenditure plan of approximately $1.1 billion for the 2027 financial year, with attention to 5G readiness, home broadband and data-centre infrastructure.
Such investment is important because increasing data usage places additional demands on network capacity.
Without corresponding infrastructure improvements, rising subscriber numbers can translate into congestion and weaker service performance.
Nigeria Remains Important Market
Nigeria plays a major role in Airtel Africa’s operations.
The country’s large population and expanding demand for mobile data make it a strategically important market.
However, telecommunications operators must contend with infrastructure costs, electricity expenses, fibre damage and customer affordability.
Those challenges can affect both network performance and the financial returns generated from infrastructure investment.
AI Could Improve Operations
Artificial intelligence is also becoming relevant to telecommunications operations.
Airtel Africa has previously highlighted the use of digital technologies and AI to improve network optimisation and customer onboarding.
Such systems can potentially help operators identify network problems, allocate resources and manage customer interactions more efficiently.
But technology investment must ultimately produce measurable improvements in service delivery.
Customer Experience Becomes Competitive Advantage
As telecommunications markets mature, companies increasingly compete on more than subscriber acquisition.
Customer retention, network reliability and digital-service quality can become important competitive advantages.
For consumers, those improvements matter because mobile connectivity is now closely linked to access to financial services, employment opportunities and online commerce.
Airtel Africa’s renewed focus on customer experience therefore comes at an important stage in the industry’s development.
The company has achieved substantial scale.
Its next challenge is ensuring that infrastructure investment and technology improvements translate into consistently reliable services for the millions of customers depending on its networks.
