Amaka Onwughalu has assumed office as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Fidelity Bank Plc, effective January 1, 2026, following the completion of the tenure of the bank’s immediate past chairman.
Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the financial institution as it consolidates recent milestones in capital strengthening, international expansion, and sustained business growth.
Under the outgoing board leadership, the bank successfully repaid its Eurobond obligations, completed the first tranche of its public offer and rights issue—both of which were oversubscribed—and expanded its operations to the United Kingdom, further boosting investor confidence and reinforcing the bank’s upward performance trajectory.
Fidelity Bank has also made significant progress in meeting regulatory capital requirements during the ongoing banking sector recapitalisation drive. The institution executed a landmark private placement that raised over N259bn in a single day, pushing its eligible capital above the N500bn threshold required for international banking operations.
With the bank entering a new phase of growth and heightened governance expectations, Onwughalu is expected to guide the board through the next stage of strategic execution.
She brings more than three decades of banking experience, including over ten years in executive management roles across commercial banking, retail banking, treasury management, corporate banking, and banking operations.
Her career includes leadership of major institutional transitions, notably during her tenure as Group Managing Director of Mainstreet Bank Limited, where she oversaw the successful integration of the bank with Skye Bank Plc. She later served as Deputy Managing Director of Skye Bank until her retirement in July 2016.
Beyond her executive banking career, Onwughalu currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited.
Academically, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Buckingham, a Master’s degree in Corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Port Harcourt.
She has also completed executive education programmes at leading global institutions including INSEAD in France, IMD Business School in Lausanne, Cambridge Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, and Columbia Business School in the United States.
Her professional affiliations include being a Senior Fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors of Nigeria, a Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration, a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management, an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors Nigeria.
Onwughalu is also recognised for promoting values-driven leadership and for her consistent commitment to mentoring and supporting women pursuing careers in business and professional sectors.
With extensive boardroom experience, crisis-tested leadership, and deep expertise in banking operations and governance, she is expected to steer Fidelity Bank as it accelerates growth, strengthens corporate governance, and advances its long-term strategic objectives.
