Copper Nears Record High as China Demand Hopes Fuel Five-Day Rally

Copper Nears Record High as China Demand Hopes Fuel Five-Day Rally

Benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange rose 0.9 per cent to $14,654 per metric tonne on Monday morning after reaching $14,710.50 during the session.

The metal’s recent record stands at $14,875 per tonne, reached on September 10.

The latest rally comes as traders anticipate a seasonal increase in demand from China, the world’s largest consumer of industrial metals.

China’s importance means relatively small changes in its construction, manufacturing, renewable-energy or power-grid demand can have significant consequences for global copper prices.

Investors Return to Copper

Speculative activity has also contributed to the rally.

Investors had previously reduced some bullish positions amid uncertainty surrounding potential US tariffs on refined copper.

Renewed buying has since pushed prices higher again.

Copper has become one of the commodities most closely associated with the global energy transition.

It is extensively used in electricity networks, renewable-energy systems, electric vehicles and electronics.

Artificial intelligence is creating another source of potential demand because the rapid construction of data centres requires substantial investment in electricity generation, transmission and cooling infrastructure.

That longer-term demand narrative has helped attract investment into copper even when short-term consumption indicators are mixed.

Supply Remains Equally Important

Strong demand expectations are only part of the price equation.

Mining companies face lengthy timelines when attempting to develop new copper projects.

Large mines can require years of exploration, permitting, financing and construction before entering production.

That has generated concerns that supply growth could struggle to match future consumption if electrification and data-centre investment continue expanding rapidly.

At the same time, high prices can encourage substitution, recycling and additional production.

The current market therefore reflects a combination of short-term Chinese demand expectations and longer-term concerns about the availability of enough copper for expanding global electricity infrastructure.

For manufacturers, higher copper prices can increase costs for products ranging from cables and transformers to vehicles and consumer electronics.

For miners, however, elevated prices strengthen project economics and can generate greater cash flow for investment.

With copper again approaching its record, China’s consumption data and changes in speculative positioning will be closely watched for signs of whether the current rally has further room to run.
