Ethiopian Airlines Orders 10 Boeing 777 Freighters to Expand Global Cargo Network

Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed an agreement with Boeing for 10 additional wide-body freighter aircraft, strengthening the African carrier’s cargo fleet as it seeks to capture rising demand for air freight and expand its global logistics network.

Under the agreement, Africa’s largest aviation group will acquire eight Boeing 777-8F Freighters and two Boeing 777F Freighters, adding significant capacity to a cargo operation that already serves more than 70 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

The agreement represents another stage in Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet modernisation programme and reflects the carrier’s strategy of positioning Addis Ababa as an increasingly important logistics gateway connecting African producers and businesses with international markets.

Ethiopian Targets Greater Cargo Capacity

Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the agreement as another important milestone in the expansion of the airline’s cargo business and international network.

According to him, the combination of Boeing 777-8F and 777F aircraft will provide the airline with greater payload capacity, operational flexibility and efficiency as demand for international air cargo services grows.

“This agreement marks another significant milestone in strengthening Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo capabilities while supporting the continued expansion of our global network,” Tasew said.

He added that the aircraft would enable Ethiopian Airlines to serve customers around the world more efficiently while supporting international trade and supply-chain connectivity.

Tasew said the investment would also reinforce Ethiopia’s position as an important cargo gateway between Africa and international markets while extending the airline’s long-term relationship with Boeing.

First African Carrier to Order 777-8F

The agreement also makes Ethiopian Airlines the first African airline to order Boeing’s new 777-8 Freighter, according to Boeing.

Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen said the order reflected both the longstanding relationship between the two companies and continued international demand for air cargo capacity.

“Ethiopian Airlines’ order for the industry-leading 777 Freighter and new 777-8 Freighter highlights both the strength of our partnership and growing demand for air cargo worldwide,” McMullen said.

He added that Ethiopian Airlines’ decision to expand with aircraft from the 777 and 777X families demonstrated the carrier’s continued confidence in Boeing’s freighter platform.

The order also extends Ethiopian Airlines’ history of introducing newer-generation commercial aircraft into the African aviation market.

777-8F Offers 118-Tonne Payload

The Boeing 777-8F is the freighter version of Boeing’s next-generation 777X family and has been designed to combine long-range capability with improved operating economics.

According to specifications contained in the agreement announcement, the aircraft offers a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes, placing it among the largest twin-engine cargo aircraft.

The manufacturer says the aircraft provides payload and range capabilities comparable with larger existing freighters while benefiting from a twin-engine configuration.

Boeing projects that the 777-8F will deliver 30 per cent better fuel efficiency and emissions performance and 25 per cent lower operating costs per tonne, alongside a smaller noise footprint.

For cargo operators, those improvements are particularly significant because fuel remains one of the largest components of airline operating expenditure.

Greater payload capacity can also allow airlines to transport more goods on individual flights, potentially improving the economics of long-distance cargo routes.

Ethiopian Already Operates Major Freighter Fleet

The new aircraft will join an established dedicated cargo fleet.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777F Freighters, two Boeing 767 Freighters and four Boeing 737-8F aircraft.

The carrier uses those aircraft to operate dedicated cargo services to more than 70 destinations across five major international regions.

The additional 10 freighters will provide the airline with greater flexibility to increase capacity on existing routes and potentially support further expansion of its cargo network.

Ethiopian’s cargo operations are particularly important for connecting African markets with major commercial centres in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Air freight provides faster access to international markets for time-sensitive and high-value shipments, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, electronics and industrial goods.

Cargo Becomes Strategic Growth Business

The investment also highlights the increasingly important role of logistics within Ethiopian Airlines’ broader aviation strategy.

While passenger operations remain central to the airline, dedicated freighters allow the company to operate cargo services independently of passenger schedules and respond more directly to international freight demand.

For African exporters, greater cargo connectivity can help reduce transportation times to overseas markets and improve access to global supply chains.

Ethiopian Airlines is consequently investing not only in aircraft but in its wider ambition to establish Ethiopia as a major aviation and logistics hub connecting Africa with the rest of the world.

The new 777-8F aircraft are expected to strengthen that strategy through greater payload capacity and lower operating costs, while the additional 777F aircraft will expand a type already established within Ethiopian’s cargo fleet.

Addis Ababa Strengthens Role as African Cargo Gateway

The size of the latest agreement illustrates Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term approach to cargo expansion.

Adding 10 wide-body freighters represents a substantial increase in dedicated cargo capacity when compared with its existing fleet of 18 freighter aircraft.

Once delivered, the new aircraft will give the carrier additional capacity to respond to international trade flows while improving flexibility across its global network.

The investment also reinforces the airline’s strategy of using Addis Ababa as a connecting point between African markets and major global commercial centres.

With eight next-generation 777-8Fs and two additional 777Fs now planned, Ethiopian Airlines is positioning cargo and logistics as an increasingly important component of its future growth.
