Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, prompting tributes from President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other political leaders.
Uduaghan died on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a hospital in Abuja, according to a family member who spoke to Channels Television. He was a medical doctor by profession and governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015, completing two terms in office.
His death has drawn attention to his years in public service, which included senior roles in the Delta State Government before he became governor.
From medical practice to state leadership
Before becoming governor, Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003.
He later became Secretary to the State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007, before succeeding James Ibori as governor.
His eight-year tenure placed him at the centre of political and administrative developments in Delta State, including efforts to expand infrastructure and improve healthcare delivery.
After leaving office in 2015, Uduaghan remained involved in political and public affairs in the state and the wider Niger Delta region.
His career connected medical practice, state administration and elective politics, making him a prominent figure in Delta State’s political history.
Tinubu, Akpabio and state leaders mourn
President Tinubu expressed condolences to Uduaghan’s family, the Delta State Government and the people of the state.
In a condolence message issued on October 19, the President described the former governor as a public servant whose leadership was devoted to Delta State’s development and national service.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also described the death as a major loss to Nigeria and the Niger Delta region. Akpabio noted that he and Uduaghan served as governors of neighbouring states during part of the same period.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also expressed sadness over the death, acknowledging Uduaghan’s years in public service and his contributions to the state.
The tributes reflect the former governor’s continuing connections with political leaders and institutions beyond his time in office.
Uduaghan’s political legacy in Delta State
Assessments of a former governor’s legacy typically encompass infrastructure, healthcare, public administration, political relationships and the wider circumstances of the state during the administration.
Uduaghan’s tenure from 2007 to 2015 remains part of Delta State’s recent political history, including the transition between successive administrations and the state’s continuing development priorities.
While political leaders have highlighted his contributions to infrastructure and healthcare, a full assessment of his record would require a broader examination of policy outcomes, public spending and the experiences of residents during his years in office.
For now, the immediate focus is on mourning his death and supporting his family.
Details of funeral arrangements should be confirmed through the family or official state announcements as they become available.
