FIRS Warns Taxpayers Against Hiding Transactions as National E-Invoicing System Goes Live

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has warned taxpayers against attempting to conceal transactions with the launch of the new National E-Invoicing Solution (Merchant-Buyer Model).

According to the Service, the digital platform makes transaction monitoring easier and more transparent, thereby reducing opportunities for evasion.

The warning was issued at a two-day post-launch workshop for large taxpayers held in Lagos.

The National E-Invoicing Solution replaces traditional paper and electronic documents such as invoices, credit notes, and debit notes. The system digitally captures all essential transaction details, including supplier and buyer information, item descriptions, quantities, prices, taxes, and total amounts.

Speaking at the workshop, the Acting Director of Tax Automation at FIRS, Mike Adoga, explained that the platform was designed to facilitate real-time or near-real-time validation and storage of transactions.

“FIRS is in the middle of providing governance and ensuring that every invoice gets a reference number, which is also part of this initiative. What we do at the Tax Automation Department of FIRS is provide all the digital tools that make tax administration seamless,” Adoga said.

The Commission emphasized that the Merchant-Buyer Model is a crucial step toward improving compliance, boosting transparency, and streamlining Nigeria’s tax administration system.
