Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has intervened in a political disagreement involving Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabir, in a move aimed at restoring cooperation within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
The reconciliation followed a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, during which the two federal lawmakers discussed their differences and agreed on the need to work together.
According to reports published on Thursday, the meeting lasted approximately two hours.
The disagreement had reportedly centred on political influence and control of party structures, with supporters of both lawmakers exchanging criticisms.
Governor Calls for Party Unity
Yusuf urged the lawmakers to put their differences behind them and prioritise cooperation within the APC.
He argued that political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine the party’s internal stability.
The governor also appealed to their supporters to stop exchanging provocative remarks.
His intervention reflects the importance of internal party coordination as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Supporters Asked to End Hostilities
A major focus of the reconciliation was the conduct of supporters associated with the two lawmakers.
The governor warned against personal attacks and statements capable of deepening political divisions.
“Henceforth, I do not expect any of your supporters to come out and abuse one another,” Yusuf said.
He maintained that political differences should be managed through dialogue rather than public hostility.
The appeal is significant because disagreements among prominent political figures can sometimes extend beyond the individuals involved.
Supporters may interpret such disputes as wider contests over party leadership, influence and access to political opportunities.
Lawmakers Pledge Cooperation
Barau and Kabir reportedly welcomed the reconciliation and urged their respective supporters to avoid actions that could worsen the disagreement.
Both lawmakers expressed commitment to the APC’s development and political activities.
Their agreement represents an attempt to contain the dispute before it creates further divisions within the party.
However, the longer-term success of the reconciliation will depend on continued cooperation and how competing political interests are managed.
Kano Remains Important Political State
Kano occupies a significant position in Nigeria’s electoral landscape because of its large population and substantial number of registered voters.
Political parties consequently place considerable emphasis on maintaining organisational structures and relationships within the state.
Disagreements among senior political figures can affect party coordination, particularly during candidate selection and campaign planning.
The reconciliation therefore carries implications beyond the personal relationship between the two lawmakers.
Internal Democracy Requires Dialogue
Disagreements over political influence are not unusual within major parties.
Political organisations bring together individuals with different interests, ambitions and constituencies.
The challenge is establishing mechanisms for resolving those differences without undermining party operations.
Dialogue, transparent internal procedures and respect for established rules can help reduce disputes.
Yusuf’s intervention reflects an attempt to use direct engagement to address tensions between senior party figures.
Focus Turns to Implementation
The immediate outcome is an agreement to cooperate and discourage hostile exchanges among supporters.
Whether the reconciliation produces lasting stability will depend on the conduct of the parties involved.
For the APC in Kano, the development offers an opportunity to redirect attention from internal disagreements towards policy discussions and electoral preparations.
The governor’s central message was that political competition should not prevent party members from working together on shared objectives.
