PIB lists functions of new agencies to replace NNPC
The Petroleum Industry Bill 2020 has listed the specific functions of the three agencies that would replace the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation when the proposed legislation is passed and assented to by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
A copy of the bill obtained by our correspondent on Monday named the three agencies to be created from the NNPC to include the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
The bill states that the NURC shall be responsible for the technical and commercial regulation of upstream petroleum operations and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations governing the upstream petroleum operations. It would ensure that such operations are carried out in a manner to minimise waste and achieve optimal government revenues among other functions.
NFF appoints American, Waldrum as Super Falcons head coach
The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the appointment of Mr Randy Waldrum as the new Head Coach of the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons.
Waldrum, an American who played as a midfielder, has worked largely within the American women football circle and was head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago national team between 2014 and 2016.
He will work with former Super Falcons’ goalkeeper and captain Ann Chiejine, who is the first Assistant Coach, while Wemimo Mathew Olanrewaju will serve as second Assistant Coach and Auwar Bashir Makwalla will be goalkeepers’ trainer. President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick thanked Philips Consulting, the executors of the recruitment process, and said he has confidence that the new technical crew will take the Super Eagles to brand new heights.
Nigeria’s gas exports recover, surpass pre-COVID-19 level
The nation’s gas exports have rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic, rising for the fourth straight month in July to 115.71 billion cubic feet, the highest level in more than a year. Nigeria, which has the largest gas reserves in Africa and the ninth-largest in the world, exports gas mainly through the Nigeria LNG Limited, the West Africa Gas Pipeline, and the Escravos Gas-to-Liquids.
The country is among the top 10 largest exporters of liquefied natural gas in the world, with a capacity of 22 million tonnes per annum. Its total gas exports tumbled to a record low of 87.28Bcf in March amid the sharp drop in global oil prices and demand, from 110.71Bcf in February and 114.96Bcf in January.
The international oil benchmark, Brent crude, had slumped to as low as $15.98 per barrel in April from $70 per barrel in January, but has been trading around $40-$45 per barrel in recent months.

Commodity import index rose by 0.16% in Q2 – NBS
The all commodity group import index rose by 0.16 per cent in the second quarter of 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday.
The NBS, in its ‘Commodity price indices and terms of trade (Q2 2020)’ report, said, “The all commodity group import index rose by 0.16 per cent between April and June 2020.
“The index was driven by an increase in the prices of footwear, headgear, umbrellas, sunshades, whips (5.52 per cent), raw hides and skins, leather, furskins, etc.; saddlery (5.28per cent), pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, precious metals (3.71 per cent). “It was, however, negatively affected by prepared foodstuffs; beverages, spirits, and vinegar; tobacco (-4.60 per cent), live animals; animal products (-1.94 per cent) and articles of stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica, ceramic (-1.36 per cent).”
The NBS said between April and May, the all commodity group import index rose by 0.84 per cent. During this period, it stated, the index was driven by higher prices of footwear, headgear, umbrellas, sunshades, whips, etc. (2.76 per cent), raw hides and skins, leather, and furskins, among others; saddler (2.67 per cent), pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, precious metals (1.87 per cent) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (1.62 per cent).
