Nigeria Could Save $10bn as Inflation and Interest Rates Fall — Oyedele

Nigeria could save more than $10bn in fiscal costs by reducing inflation to single-digit levels and creating conditions for interest rates to decline, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said.

Oyedele said the potential savings, based on 2026 figures, would help ease pressure on government finances and strengthen the case for closer coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Thailand, where policymakers discussed economic stability, borrowing costs and growth prospects.

The minister described lower inflation and interest rates as key priorities for the government, arguing that the cost of financing public debt places pressure on resources that could otherwise support development spending.

Inflation and debt-servicing costs

High inflation can influence government borrowing costs by affecting investor expectations, market interest rates and the returns demanded on government securities.

When borrowing costs remain elevated, governments must devote a larger share of revenue to servicing debt, potentially limiting the resources available for infrastructure, healthcare, education and other public services.

Oyedele said bringing inflation into single digits would help create conditions for interest rates to fall to comparable levels, reducing the burden of financing government obligations.

However, lower inflation does not automatically guarantee an equivalent reduction in borrowing costs. Interest rates also reflect credit risks, liquidity conditions, government financing needs, exchange-rate expectations and investor confidence.

The projected $10bn saving should therefore be understood as the government’s stated potential benefit rather than a guaranteed outcome.

CBN’s inflation-targeting framework

Oyedele said the Central Bank of Nigeria’s planned transition towards inflation targeting would make coordination between monetary and fiscal authorities increasingly important.

Inflation targeting involves using a defined inflation objective to guide monetary policy decisions and communicate the central bank’s intentions to the public and financial markets.

The framework can help anchor expectations, but its effectiveness depends on credible policy implementation, reliable economic data and the ability to respond to changing conditions.

Closer coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities could also help reduce policy conflicts that complicate efforts to stabilise prices.

Balancing stability with economic growth

Nigeria faces the challenge of lowering inflation while maintaining economic activity and ensuring that businesses can obtain affordable financing.

For manufacturers and small businesses, high borrowing costs can discourage investment, restrict working capital and delay expansion plans. Households also face pressure when elevated prices erode purchasing power.

A sustained decline in inflation and interest rates could improve planning and support investment, but the timing and scale of the benefits will depend on economic conditions and policy execution.

The government’s immediate challenge is to turn its inflation and borrowing-cost objectives into measurable improvements in fiscal sustainability, private-sector credit and living standards.
