OPay Targets Wall Street, Plans NGX Listing as Revenue Surges 136% to $467m

Financial technology company OPay is positioning itself for a major expansion into international capital markets following its application for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, with plans also underway for a possible secondary listing on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The fintech company, which generates nearly 90 per cent of its revenue from Nigeria, filed its registration statement for a proposed US public offering on October 9, 2026, seeking to list its American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol OPAY.

Although the company has yet to disclose the number of shares to be offered, the proposed share price or the final amount it intends to raise, Renaissance Capital estimates that the transaction could reach $500 million.

The proposed listing represents a significant development for OPay, which has grown from a privately held financial technology company into a major participant in Nigeria’s digital payments and financial services industry.

However, the IPO remains subject to regulatory processes and market conditions, and no shares have been confirmed as publicly traded under the proposed listing.

OPay Revenue Jumps 136% in Six Months

OPay’s planned entry into the public market comes amid substantial growth in its financial performance.

According to figures disclosed in the company’s offering documents, revenue rose to $467.1 million in the first half of 2026, compared with $197.5 million recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.

The performance represents year-on-year growth of approximately 136.5 per cent, reflecting increased activity across its financial services operations.

The company’s profitability also improved significantly during the period.

Net income increased from $21.7 million in the first six months of 2025 to $90.9 million in the first half of 2026.

This represents an increase of approximately 319 per cent, highlighting the company’s ability to convert a larger share of its expanding business activities into earnings.

The strong financial performance could strengthen investor interest in the proposed IPO, particularly as international investors continue to evaluate opportunities within Africa’s growing digital financial services market.

Nevertheless, sustaining such growth will remain a key consideration for prospective shareholders.

Nigeria Accounts for Nearly 90% of Revenue

Despite operating in several emerging markets, Nigeria remains the largest contributor to OPay’s revenue.

The company’s financial disclosures showed that its Nigerian operations generated $417.6 million during the first half of 2026, representing approximately 89.5 per cent of total revenue.

OPay also operates in Indonesia, Egypt and Pakistan, but its Nigerian business remains the dominant driver of its financial performance.

This dependence underscores the importance of Nigeria’s expanding digital payments ecosystem to the company’s growth strategy.

Over the years, OPay has established a strong presence in the country through mobile transfers, merchant payments and other financial services.

Its network of digital payment solutions has become increasingly visible among individuals, small businesses and merchants seeking convenient alternatives to traditional banking channels.

However, the concentration of revenue in one market could also expose the company to changes in Nigeria’s economic conditions, regulatory environment and financial services industry.

Investors examining the proposed IPO are therefore expected to assess the company’s ability to diversify revenue across its international operations.

Lending Business Emerges as Major Growth Driver

Beyond payments and transfers, OPay’s lending operations have become an increasingly important source of revenue.

The company’s loan-financing services generated $236.1 million in revenue during the first half of 2026, compared with $88.1 million in the corresponding period of 2025.

The increase represents growth of approximately 168 per cent.

The number of quarterly unique borrowers in Nigeria also expanded from 3.5 million to 6.7 million over the same period.

The figures indicate growing demand for credit services among customers using OPay’s financial technology ecosystem.

Digital lending has become an important segment of Nigeria’s fintech industry as providers seek to improve access to financing for individuals and small businesses.

Technology-driven credit platforms can simplify loan applications and reduce some of the administrative processes associated with conventional lending.

However, the expansion of credit services introduces additional financial risks, particularly where borrowers experience difficulties meeting repayment obligations.

Credit Loss Provisions Triple to $123.6m

While OPay’s lending business has contributed significantly to revenue growth, its financial disclosures also indicate rising exposure to credit risk.

The company’s provision for credit losses increased from $38.1 million in the first half of 2025 to $123.6 million during the corresponding period of 2026.

This represents an increase of approximately 224 per cent.

Credit loss provisions are amounts recognised to account for expected losses on loans and other credit exposures.

The sharp increase indicates that OPay is accounting for substantially greater potential losses as its lending activities expand.

For investors, the development raises important questions about the sustainability of the company’s credit-driven growth.

Although lending can generate higher revenue, profitability depends on effective borrower assessment, loan recovery and risk management.

The company’s ability to maintain earnings growth while controlling credit losses is therefore expected to attract significant attention during the IPO process.

Stanbic Africa Holdings Eyes $200m Investment

OPay’s proposed public offering could also attract a substantial investment from Stanbic Africa Holdings, a subsidiary of South Africa’s Standard Bank Group.

According to the supplied offering details, the investor has indicated interest in committing up to $200 million to the transaction.

The proposed investment could provide additional institutional support for OPay’s capital market ambitions.

However, the amount remains a potential commitment rather than a confirmed completed investment.

Any final participation would depend on the offering’s terms and other applicable conditions.

The interest highlights the potential appeal of African financial technology companies to established financial institutions seeking exposure to digital banking and payments.

OPay Considers Secondary Listing on NGX

Beyond Wall Street, OPay is also considering a secondary listing on the Nigerian Exchange.

Reports dated October 11, 2026, indicated that the company had obtained board and shareholder approval to pursue a Nigerian listing following its planned New York Stock Exchange debut.

The proposed NGX listing would remain subject to market conditions, applicable regulatory approvals and other listing requirements.

If completed, the move could provide Nigerian investors with an opportunity to acquire shares in a company whose services are already widely used across the country.

It could also strengthen the representation of technology-driven financial services companies on the Nigerian capital market.

However, OPay has not yet completed the proposed Nigerian listing, and the announcement does not mean its shares are currently available for purchase on the NGX.

Potential Boost for Nigeria’s Capital Market

A successful secondary listing could have broader implications for Nigeria’s financial market.

Technology companies have traditionally relied heavily on private venture capital and institutional financing to fund expansion.

Public listings provide another avenue for raising capital and creating liquidity for existing shareholders.

They can also introduce new investment opportunities for pension funds, asset managers and individual investors.

For the NGX, attracting a major fintech company could contribute to efforts to diversify market listings beyond established sectors such as banking, consumer goods, industrial goods and energy.

Nevertheless, the impact would depend on the structure, size and trading activity of any eventual listing.

OPay Holds $532.9m in Short-Term Investments

The company’s financial disclosures also showed that it held $532.9 million in short-term investments as of June 30, 2026.

The figure provides additional insight into the scale of financial assets reported by the company.

Short-term investments may form part of a company’s liquidity and treasury management arrangements.

However, they should not automatically be interpreted as unrestricted cash available for expansion or shareholder distributions.

Investors will need to assess the composition, ownership restrictions and associated obligations of these assets when examining the company’s financial position.

From Nigerian Fintech Expansion to Global Markets

Founded in 2017 by Chinese entrepreneur Yahui Zhou, OPay subsequently expanded its operations into Nigeria, where it developed a large digital financial services business.

The company’s growth attracted significant venture capital investment.

In 2021, OPay raised $400 million at a reported valuation of $2 billion, with SoftBank among its investors.

The financing helped establish the company as one of Africa’s prominent privately backed fintech businesses.

Its journey towards a public listing gained further momentum in February 2026, when it reportedly submitted a confidential filing for a US IPO.

The public registration statement filed in October represents another stage in that process.

Investors to Examine Profitability and Risk

As OPay prepares for a potential stock market debut, attention will increasingly focus on its financial performance, growth strategy and exposure to risk.

The company’s rapid revenue expansion and improved profitability provide evidence of significant commercial momentum.

However, its heavy dependence on Nigeria and the growing importance of lending present challenges that investors will need to evaluate.

The increase in credit loss provisions also highlights the need for disciplined risk management as the company expands its loan portfolio.

For Nigeria’s technology industry, a successful OPay listing could become an important milestone in the development of African fintech businesses.

It could demonstrate a potential pathway for privately funded technology companies seeking access to international capital markets while maintaining connections with domestic investors.

Ultimately, the success of the proposed IPO will depend not only on investor demand but also on OPay’s ability to sustain profitability, manage credit exposure and demonstrate long-term business resilience.

With Wall Street and a possible Nigerian Exchange listing now in view, OPay is entering a new phase in which its financial performance will face greater public scrutiny.
