SEC Launches Nationwide Drive to Recover Unclaimed Dividends, Inherited Investments

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a nationwide campaign to help investors and beneficiaries recover unclaimed dividends and inherited investments, in a renewed effort to strengthen investor protection and reduce dormant assets in Nigeria’s capital market.

The initiative was reported on Monday, August 10, 2026, as the commission steps up efforts to reconnect legitimate owners with financial assets that have remained unclaimed.

SEC targets unclaimed investments

Unclaimed dividends have remained a longstanding challenge in Nigeria’s capital market. Investors may fail to receive dividends for several reasons, including outdated personal information, incomplete registration details or failure to link investment records to appropriate bank accounts.

The situation can become more complicated when an investor dies and family members or beneficiaries are unaware of investments held by the deceased.

The SEC’s latest campaign is designed to address these gaps by creating greater awareness and helping affected investors navigate the process of recovering their assets.

Focus on inherited assets

A major component of the initiative is the recovery of investments belonging to deceased investors.

Beneficiaries can face difficulties accessing shares, dividends and other capital-market assets when the appropriate probate and documentation processes have not been completed.

The SEC’s investor-awareness drive is therefore intended to provide information and guidance to families seeking to establish their entitlement to inherited investments.

The commission has previously provided guidance on the retrieval of unclaimed dividends, including procedures for searching for outstanding dividends and completing the necessary e-dividend documentation.

Investor protection remains a priority

The campaign is part of the SEC’s broader investor-protection mandate.

The commission is Nigeria’s apex regulator for the capital market, with responsibilities that include protecting investors, promoting fair and efficient markets and maintaining confidence in the financial system.

By helping investors recover dormant assets, the regulator is also seeking to improve participation in the capital market.

For many Nigerians, unclaimed dividends may represent money accumulated from shares purchased years ago. Ensuring that legitimate owners can identify and recover such funds could strengthen confidence in equities and other investment products.

SEC urges investors to take action

The latest campaign also serves as a reminder to investors to keep their personal and banking information up to date.

Investors should regularly check their investment records, ensure their dividend mandates are properly linked and maintain documentation that can establish ownership of securities.

Beneficiaries of deceased investors should also ensure that relevant probate documentation is properly obtained before attempting to claim inherited investment assets.

The SEC maintains an online resource explaining the process for searching for unclaimed dividends and submitting claims through the appropriate channels.

Strengthening Nigeria’s capital market

The recovery of unclaimed investments could have wider implications for Nigeria’s capital market.

Beyond returning money to its rightful owners, greater awareness of dormant assets can encourage investors to maintain accurate records and remain engaged with their investments.

The SEC’s nationwide campaign therefore combines investor education, asset recovery and stronger investor protection.

As Nigeria continues efforts to deepen its capital market and attract more domestic participation, ensuring that investors can access the returns and assets legally belonging to them remains an important part of building public confidence.
