NRS Unveils E-Invoicing System for Medium-Sized Firms, Sets July 1, 2026 Go-Live

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has announced the rollout of its E-Invoicing & Electronic Fiscal System (EFS), also known as the Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS), in a move set to transform tax administration for medium-sized businesses.

Under the implementation framework, companies with annual turnover between N1 billion and N5 billion will follow a structured transition timeline beginning with Stakeholder Engagement in January 2026. This will be followed by a Pilot Rollout phase ahead of a mandatory Go-Live date scheduled for July 1, 2026.

Stakeholders said the shift to digital invoicing would significantly reduce errors, eliminate lost receipts and minimize manual accounting challenges that often affect tax reporting accuracy.

The NRS noted that even smaller Emerging Taxpayers will be integrated into the system by July 2027, broadening the digital tax net and ensuring uniform compliance standards across business categories.

According to the Service, the initiative is aimed at strengthening tax administration, enhancing transparency and improving revenue tracking across all levels of enterprise.

After the July 2026 launch, participating businesses will undergo a Post Go-Live Review in late 2026, with Compliance Enforcement expected to commence in early 2027.

Through the digital platform, accessible via einvoice.nrs.gov.ng, taxpayers will be able to register, issue and track invoices electronically. The system is designed to reduce paperwork while ensuring that every transaction is properly documented and traceable.

Analysts say the adoption of the EFS represents a significant milestone in modernising Nigeria’s fiscal framework, bringing medium and small enterprises into a more transparent and efficient tax environment.
