The Federal Government, through the FGN Power Company, is intensifying efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure in Ebonyi State and Enugu State as implementation of Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative gathers momentum.

The development follows a series of high-level engagements between officials of the power company and representatives of both state governments, aimed at accelerating project execution and ensuring long-term sustainability.

The delegation was led by the Chief Commercial Officer of FGN Power Company, Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, who met with Secretaries to the State Governments, Commissioners of Energy and other key stakeholders to align priorities and address potential implementation challenges.

Speaking during the meetings, Daramola-Oniru emphasised the importance of strong collaboration in delivering major infrastructure projects.

“The success of the PPI goes beyond technical execution; it is rooted in strong partnerships with state governments, host communities and key stakeholders. Engaging stakeholders from the onset ensures local ownership, reduces implementation risks and guarantees that these investments serve the people long after project completion,” he said.

In Ebonyi State, discussions focused on major transmission upgrades, including the proposed Ugwaji–Okposi 330kV double circuit transmission line.

The project is expected to unlock stranded electricity generation capacity and strengthen grid stability, thereby improving power supply to homes, businesses and public institutions across the region.

The Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government, Grace Umezurike, welcomed the initiative and described it as critical to the state’s development plans.

“We wholeheartedly welcome these projects and pledge our full support to ensure they are delivered on schedule. In Ebonyi, the significance of this intervention cannot be overstated; it is the backbone required to power our international airport, our hospitals and our schools,” she said.

Meanwhile, in Enugu State, the rollout of the Presidential Power Initiative is being positioned as a key driver of economic growth and urban modernisation.

State officials noted that the project aligns with the government’s ambition to transform Enugu into a smart and investment-friendly city.

The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, stressed that reliable electricity remains essential to the state’s development agenda.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with the governor’s vision to transform Enugu into a modern smart city. A robust and reliable power network is the prerequisite for the digital and industrial revolution we are building,” he said.

Onyia added that the state government is ready to provide the necessary support and cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of the projects.

With both states pledging full cooperation, the FGN Power Company said the renewed collaboration is expected to accelerate delivery timelines and maximise the impact of the first phase of the Presidential Power Initiative.

The project is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernise Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and improve power supply across the country.
