Banks Place ₦7.9tn With CBN as Excess Liquidity Builds

Nigerian banks increased their placements with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) to ₦7.9 trillion during the week, reflecting elevated liquidity in the financial system and limited immediate demand for funds, according to figures reported by The Sun.

The report said net system liquidity rose to ₦6.94 trillion from ₦6.28 trillion in the previous week, after peaking at ₦8.4 trillion midweek.

The increase followed inflows from maturing financial instruments, including approximately ₦2.1 trillion in Open Market Operations (OMO) bills, ₦392.8 billion in Treasury bills and ₦330 billion in primary-market repayments.

These maturities returned funds to the banking system, contributing to the accumulation of surplus cash available to financial institutions.

Rather than deploying all the funds into interbank lending or other assets, banks placed a substantial amount with the CBN through its deposit facility.

Maturing securities boost liquidity

OMO bills and Treasury bills are instruments used in government and central bank operations to manage liquidity and finance public-sector requirements.

When such instruments mature, the repayment of principal returns money to investors, including banks, unless the funds are immediately reinvested in new securities or deployed elsewhere.

The reported maturities therefore provided an additional source of liquidity during the week.

The accumulation of funds at the SDF suggests that participating banks had substantial cash balances relative to their immediate funding needs.

However, the figures alone do not establish that demand for loans across the entire economy has weakened. Lending decisions also depend on credit risk, interest rates, borrowers’ financial positions, regulatory requirements and banks’ appetite for particular sectors.

What the placements mean for monetary policy

The SDF allows eligible financial institutions to deposit surplus funds with the CBN under the applicable monetary policy framework.

Movements in SDF balances can help provide insight into short-term liquidity conditions, particularly when considered alongside interbank rates, government security yields, lending activity and other money-market indicators.

High placements may indicate that banks prefer to hold surplus liquidity at the central bank rather than lend it to other institutions or commit it to riskier assets.

For businesses and households, however, abundant liquidity in the banking system does not automatically translate into cheaper or more accessible credit.

The availability of loans also depends on banks’ assessment of borrowers, the cost of funds, the monetary policy environment and broader economic conditions.

The reported ₦7.9 trillion in SDF placements therefore points to substantial liquidity absorption by the CBN, while the effect on private-sector lending will need to be assessed using broader credit and interest-rate data.
