The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken delivery of two ambulifts for use at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger accessibility and strengthen service delivery within the country’s aviation sector.
The development is expected to improve boarding and disembarkation arrangements for passengers with reduced mobility, including elderly travellers, wheelchair users and individuals requiring additional physical assistance.
FAAN announced the acquisition on Thursday, October 8, 2026, explaining that the equipment would support safer and more dignified movement between aircraft and airport facilities.
The vehicles are designed to provide an alternative to conventional aircraft boarding stairs for passengers who may experience difficulties using them.
According to the authority, the initiative forms part of a broader commitment to improving passenger experience and ensuring that airport services are accessible to different categories of travellers.
The acquisition comes amid ongoing infrastructure improvements at the Lagos international airport, one of Nigeria’s most important aviation gateways.
Specialised Equipment to Improve Passenger Experience
Ambulifts are specialised airport vehicles fitted with lifting platforms or cabins that allow passengers with limited mobility to board or disembark from aircraft without climbing conventional stairs.
They are particularly useful at aircraft parking positions where passenger boarding bridges are unavailable.
For passengers using wheelchairs or those recovering from injuries, conventional boarding arrangements can present significant challenges.
The availability of ambulifts helps address these difficulties by providing a safer and more convenient transfer process.
FAAN said the new equipment would contribute to the provision of appropriate assistance for passengers requiring additional support.
The keys to the vehicles were handed over by the Director of Airport Operations, Captain Abdullahi Mahmood, to the airport service operator responsible for their deployment.
The authority expects the equipment to improve operational efficiency and support more inclusive passenger handling procedures.
Lagos Airport Undergoing Wider Infrastructure Upgrades
The acquisition is part of wider improvement efforts at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
FAAN has been implementing projects aimed at modernising passenger facilities, improving movement between terminals and addressing operational challenges.
Among the major developments is the overhead bridge designed to connect Terminals One and Two.
The authority has indicated that the bridge is expected to be ready for use during the December 2026 travel period.
The project is intended to improve movement within the airport environment and strengthen connections between passenger facilities.
FAAN has also outlined plans to introduce improved flight information systems, accessible elevators, ramps and dedicated wheelchair routes within upgraded terminal areas.
These improvements are designed to make airport navigation easier for passengers with different mobility and accessibility needs.
Accessibility Becomes Important Aviation Priority
Accessibility has become an increasingly important issue in the global aviation industry.
Airport operators are expected to provide services that accommodate passengers with disabilities and those requiring additional assistance.
Such services include accessible terminal facilities, trained support personnel, appropriate communication systems and safe boarding arrangements.
In Nigeria, passengers with reduced mobility sometimes face challenges relating to movement through terminals, boarding arrangements and the availability of specialised assistance.
Improving these services requires coordinated action among airport authorities, airlines, ground-handling companies and other service providers.
The acquisition of ambulifts represents one component of this broader responsibility.
However, the effectiveness of the equipment will depend on maintenance, availability of trained operators and timely deployment when passengers require assistance.
FAAN Plans Better Passenger Movement
The ongoing airport modernisation programme also includes efforts to improve passenger circulation and reduce congestion.
Airport authorities have been working to separate arrival and departure movements more effectively and improve access between different terminal areas.
These measures are particularly important at an airport handling large numbers of domestic and international passengers.
Improved passenger movement can reduce confusion, enhance safety and make airport operations more efficient.
For travellers with mobility limitations, the availability of accessible routes and appropriate assistance could significantly improve the overall travel experience.
Airport Rail Connection Also Under Consideration
Beyond terminal upgrades, the Federal Government is pursuing plans to extend the Lagos Red Line rail system into the airport.
The proposed connection is expected to link the airport with the wider Lagos rail network, providing passengers with an alternative to road transportation.
FAAN has indicated that the planned extension could include several stops serving major airport facilities.
The project remains subject to design, environmental assessment and procurement processes.
If completed, the rail connection could improve accessibility for airport users and reduce dependence on road transport.
Focus on Service Delivery
The deployment of the new ambulifts highlights the growing importance of inclusive infrastructure in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
While modern terminals and transport connections are essential, passengers also require dependable assistance services that respond to individual needs.
For FAAN, the challenge will be ensuring that the new equipment remains operational and that passengers can access it without unnecessary delays.
The authority’s broader infrastructure programme could improve passenger satisfaction and strengthen the competitiveness of Lagos airport as a regional aviation hub.
The latest acquisition therefore represents another step towards improving accessibility, safety and service quality within Nigeria’s aviation system.
