The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has launched an investigation into a viral bread review that sparked public concern over product quality, following the arrest and lawsuit of the reviewer.
The commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, disclosed the development on Tuesday during an appearance on The Morning Brief.
Ijagwu said the agency acted promptly after becoming aware of the case, describing it as one that raised “red flags” requiring immediate intervention.
According to him, the FCCPC not only initiated an investigation but also facilitated the release of the consumer, identified as Love Doshima, who had been detained after criticising a bread product in a viral video.
The commission further collaborated with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to analyse the bread sample referenced in the review.
“We facilitated with NAFDAC to take on board the sample that was referenced by that particular consumer for further analysis,” Ijagwu said, adding that the agency is closely monitoring developments.
He emphasised that consumers have a legal right to share their experiences and seek redress, noting that such rights are protected under Nigerian law.
“The law ensures that consumers are provided with information and also guarantees them the right to be heard,” he stated, underscoring that the right to be heard is integral to the broader right to redress.
The controversy began after Doshima posted a video claiming that a loaf of bread she purchased remained fresh for over two months—an assertion that quickly went viral and raised questions about preservatives and product standards.
In response, the baker filed a ₦50 million lawsuit against her and reportedly facilitated her arrest, prompting public debate over consumer rights, free expression, and product accountability.
Ijagwu assured that the FCCPC would follow the case through to its conclusion, reiterating the commission’s commitment to protecting consumers while ensuring fair practices in the marketplace.
