SoftBank-backed data-centre developer SB Energy will sell as much as $500 million worth of new shares to Japanese investors as part of its planned US stock-market listing, highlighting the enormous amounts of capital flowing into infrastructure supporting the artificial intelligence boom.
A regulatory filing disclosed on Tuesday showed that the company will issue new shares to Japanese investors alongside its proposed US Initial Public Offering, IPO.
The money will be used for general operating expenses associated with the development of data centres, electricity generation and related infrastructure.
The filing did not disclose the overall size of the US offering.
However, Reuters previously reported that SoftBank could seek a valuation of approximately $50 billion for SB Energy.
Nvidia Commits $1.5bn
The planned flotation has already attracted one of the biggest names in artificial intelligence.
Chipmaker Nvidia has committed to invest $1.5 billion through a private placement at the IPO price, according to SB Energy’s investment prospectus released earlier in September.
OpenAI has also received warrants worth approximately $5.5 billion.
Those commitments illustrate the increasingly interconnected structure of the global AI industry.
AI companies need enormous amounts of computing capacity.
That requires chips, but it also requires data centres, electricity generation, cooling systems, land, fibre-optic networks and other infrastructure.
Companies capable of providing those resources are consequently becoming valuable parts of the AI investment chain.
AI Boom Moves Beyond Chips
For much of the artificial-intelligence investment boom, Nvidia and other semiconductor companies attracted most investor attention.
The next phase is increasingly about infrastructure.
Training and operating sophisticated AI systems can require thousands of advanced processors running continuously inside enormous data centres.
Those facilities consume substantial amounts of electricity.
As AI models become larger and businesses deploy them more widely, demand for computing capacity is expected to increase further.
SB Energy’s strategy combines those two requirements — data centres and power generation — positioning the company to benefit from the physical infrastructure required to operate AI.
IPO Wave Accelerates
SB Energy’s flotation would join a rapidly expanding pipeline of technology companies seeking access to public capital markets.
SpaceX listed in June, while Anthropic is preparing for its own potentially enormous flotation.
Japanese investors alone secured approximately $2.2 billion of SpaceX shares during its IPO, Reuters reported.
The figures illustrate the appetite institutional investors continue to show for businesses connected with artificial intelligence and advanced computing.
But they also create questions about valuation.
Investors are increasingly being asked to value companies based partly on expectations that AI computing demand will continue growing at extraordinary rates for many years.
If those expectations weaken, some of the industry’s high valuations could come under pressure.
Power Becomes AI’s Next Bottleneck
SB Energy’s emphasis on electricity generation highlights another important shift.
The AI industry’s biggest constraint may eventually become less about obtaining processors and more about finding enough reliable electricity to run them.
Governments and technology companies are already examining nuclear power, natural gas and renewable energy as they attempt to meet rapidly growing data-centre electricity demand.
That makes energy companies increasingly important participants in what was once primarily considered a technology industry.
SB Energy’s proposed $50 billion valuation therefore reflects more than investor enthusiasm for another data-centre operator.
It illustrates how the AI boom is transforming electricity, land and physical infrastructure into some of technology’s most strategically valuable assets.
