South Africa businesses face pressure from rising costs and weaker commodity prices

South African mining companies have suffered major declines in market value this year as rising operating costs and falling mineral prices continue to weigh on the sector.

Sibanye Stillwater, one of the country’s largest mining companies, has seen its share price fall by more than 42 per cent since the beginning of 2026 amid pressure on platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold operations.

The company, which operates mines in Marikana and Rustenburg, focuses primarily on platinum group metals and gold production.

Sibanye Stillwater was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2013 following its separation from Gold Fields, inheriting mature gold mining assets at Kloof and Driefontein.

The company’s share price stood at R60.82 on January 2, 2026, before declining to R35.18 on July 24.

The decline wiped about R74 billion from its market value, reducing its market capitalisation from approximately R173 billion at the start of the year to about R99 billion at last week’s close.

The decline has been driven partly by weaker global platinum prices, which have fallen by about 23 per cent since the beginning of the year.

Mining companies have also faced rising operational expenses, particularly from increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa.

Eskom has raised electricity tariffs for bulk supply by roughly 9 per cent over the past year, with municipalities implementing similar increases for households and businesses.

The higher energy costs have placed significant pressure on mining companies, which require large amounts of electricity to maintain production.

The increase in operating expenses has reduced profit margins and contributed to declining investor confidence in the sector.

Other platinum producers have experienced similar challenges.

Northam Platinum’s share price has declined by approximately 34 per cent this year, falling from R346.64 on January 2 to R227.20 on July 24.

Impala Platinum has also recorded a similar decline, with its share price dropping from R269.61 at the start of the year to R177 on July 24.

Analysts said the companies are facing common industry-wide challenges, including weaker commodity prices, rising production costs and increased pressure from South Africa’s energy costs.

Other major mining companies, including Kumba Iron Ore and Gold Fields, have also recorded declines in their share prices on the JSE as investors continue to assess the outlook for the mining sector.
